She secretly wishes to act in her school’s musical and show off her beautiful singing voice, but her weight issues prevent her from doing so. It revolves around fifteen-year-old Ever Davies, who weighs three hundred and two pounds, and has an extremely low self esteem. Recently, I read the young adult novel Skinny, the debut book of author Donna Cooner. Once again, Skinny is highly recommended and addictive whether you’re confident or not, and it will show you how to love yourself. Although I can’t exactly relate to Ever, I somehow understood her, feeling each emotion that she felt, which is my definition of a good book. However, when you do figure it out, savor it and go through with it. At the end of the book, Ever made me realize that there is a difference between what you thought you wanted, and what you actually want, and that it may take awhile to realize what you actually want. There are characters that stand by her the whole time, and there are characters that weren’t always there, yet she was too blind to see which people were and which people weren’t. Being 302 pounds at fifteen years old limits or eliminates almost everything you can do, and you see how she overcomes this throughout the book. As Ever, the main character, takes you through her journey of weight loss, you see that losing weight isn’t so easy. Skinny is an excellent book that I suggest to all teens.
