It was also published in Great Britain, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain and Brazil, and has received international acclaim. The Island at the Center of the World was a bestseller in the U.S. (Hint on the outcome: neither man got his wish, but both ended up influencing American history in startling and profound ways.) I’m a strong believer in the idea that meaning is best conveyed via narrative, which means focusing on individuals and their struggles, and the story I tell centers on two men and their very different ideas about what the wilderness island called Manhattan might become. The argument is that the Dutch founding of Manhattan - and of the colony of New Netherland, which extended across the whole Middle Atlantic region - seeded not only New York’s immigrant culture, but America’s melting pot. The Island at the Center of the World is a narrative history of Manhattan’s founding.

7/4/2023 0 Comments The pale horse seriesBut ultimately, this back-and-forth switch between these settings and scenarios, motives and motivations comes at the expense of crafting a plausible, earned ending to the core mystery.Īiring as two episodes in the U.S. The costumes and production design are great, a tricky mix of expensive class signifiers and rustic vintage elements without being twee. It leans in hard to the contrast between slick, successful Carnaby Street-curious Mark and the visceral pagan folk horror of the English countryside. This is both the good and the bad of “The Pale Horse” on Amazon Prime Video. And in our post-”Midsommar” world, everyone knows that’s when things are going to start getting real. Thanks to his profound narcissism and arrogance - I mean, it’s earned, you guys have seen Sewell in a vintage suit, right? I know you have, because I picked the photo for this review - Mark is essentially unfazed by his first wife and his mistress dying until the wicker man and corn dollies start appearing around him. Maisel’ Flash Forwards Created a New Costume Challenge 7/4/2023 0 Comments Grossman life and fate reviewHere is a novel which ranges from the Stalinist purges and the Ukraine Famine during collectivisation in the 1930s to the siege of Stalingrad in 1942-3 and the lost souls of the Nazi concentration camps and the Soviet Gulag a novel whose characters debate good and evil, totalitarianism and individual freedom, and in which the author dares to take the reader beyond the sealed doors of the gas chamber. What I can say at the outset is that Life and Fate has to be the first place to go in order to understand the horrors of the 20th century. It is difficult to know where to begin when responding to Vasily Grossman’s Life and Fate, such is the sweeping, panoramic vision contained within its covers. But if what is human in human beings has not been destroyed even now, then evil will never conquer. It is a battle fought by a great evil struggling to crush a small kernel of human kindness. Human history is not the battle of good struggling to overcome evil. 7/4/2023 0 Comments Breakable by tammara webberHis voice is sexy, sensitive and emotional. And, yes, by the end of this book you will have answers to all the questions about Lucas that were left unanswered in "Easy." PERFORMANCE - One of my new favorite narrators. The other timeline is told by Lucas, beginning sometime during his senior year in college when he meets Jacqueline. His happy childhood was interrupted by a horrific event when he was 13, after which time he began going by his middle name and became a partying "bad boy." This book alternates between two timelines - one about Landon, beginning immediately after that event and continuing till high school graduation. And did I mention he's HOT? (swoon!) For those who have not heard "Easy," Landon Lucas Maxfield (main character) is emotionally complicated. First he's obsessed with meeting Jacqueline and then he just wants to love, protect and cherish her. Lucas has the sexual preoccupation you might expect of a college student, but he's also very sensitive and romantic. They both cover pretty much the same territory but, since this is told from Lucas' male perspective, it didn't seem repetitive. STORY (new adult romance) - I really loved this story. Confused who is hotter - Lucas or the narrator!! However, there wasn’t enough evidence to help investigators piece together what happened the night Erica disappeared. The keys were missing and her purse was still inside the car, untouched. The two women prepare food, take long car rides, and decorate a Christmas tree together. They discuss domestic matters: Therese’s oafish fiancé and his family, Carol’s soon to be divorced husband Harge and their daughter Rindy. The women carefully circle one another, meeting at cafes in New York or at Carol’s house. Carol calls her the next day and the two meet for coffee their relationship begins. The “I love yous” and “You’re magnificents” she longs to write are replaced by “Salutations,” and she sends the card off in nervous anticipation. Fear gets the better of her, though, and she substitutes a clumsy Christmas card. Obsessed, Therese pens a secret love letter, detailing her passion and sexual desire for Carol. It’s love at first sight and Therese falls head over heels for her beautiful married customer, Carol Aird. One day at work, she assists a beautiful woman in picking out a doll for her daughter. The book’s protagonist, Therese Belivet, is young theater set designer who pays the bills with a department store day job. The Dumpy Book was the one that I got from the library. It was first published by Grant Richards in October 1899 as one in a series of small-format books called The Dumpy Books for Children. Helen Bannerman from the great land of Scotland, wrote and illustrated The Story of Little Black Sambo somewhere in the 1890’s. There was a land with talking tigers and pancake dinners. The color of the people’s skin was different, they wore different clothes. The book took me to a place that was nothing like my own. I grew up with a big green book filled with beautiful illustrations drawn by Bonnie and Bill Rutherford. “The only authorized American Edition,” is a small square book. Unfortunately, it was not the book I remembered. Luckily, there was one copy of “The only authorized American Edition,” of The Story of Little Black Sambo. Since I’m a critic and I have been all my life, I’m pretty sure I’ve known what makes a story great (probably known since birth.) As I thumbed through the mounds of books at the library, I found the one story you could read to me over and over again as a child. Where do you start? Overflowing shelves full of average, terrible, mediocre, and wonderful stories and illustrations.īut what makes a great story? What makes a child think a story is great?
